Many thanks to Tim, Karl, Pete, and Simon for responding to my previous request
for help with the installation of xdvik and dvipsk.  It turned out that I
simply needed to change write permissions on PK related files.  I got concerned
about the success of my installation when MetaFont started generating PK files
for standard fonts - I had thought that these files were already present on
the distribution tape and that MetaFont was re-generating them because it was
looking for them in some other directory; obviously my assumption was in error.

So, I'm very pleased to report that I now have LaTeX 2.09, TeX 3.141, MetaFont
2.71, xdvik 1.8, and dvipsk 5.55a successfully installed and running on a
Sun SPARCstation 10 (sun4m architecture) with the Solaris 2.3 OS and gcc 2.4
compiler.
